Style Theory: The suede skirt, a multi season piece, timeless and cool, an invaluable addition to your 2015 wardrobe.
The Marks and Spencer midi skirt has been leading the pack so far this season seen below on Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo...
It encapsulates the 70s boho trend with hints of Gucci and Prada, the fact that it is from M&S means the designer look is all the more accessible. It has been billed as the skirt of the season by Vogue and has been much hyped in social media making it a cult item.

The styling is stunning, the white stitching so perfectly 70s and the split avoids it looking mumsy.
However, if you are like me and find midi skirts a little difficult to wear, how about a shorter suede skirt? They are easy to style, wear with boho top in the summer and black roll neck, black opaque tights and black flat boots in the winter. There is also no problem with coat lengths, shorter skirts work just as well with short or long coats (with midis there is always the problem of ensuring your skirt hangs below your coat length) I love the styling below..
When I popped into Topshop the other day I tried on a perfect little, button through, real, suede skirt.

It is a slightly heavy suede that sits really well and the A-line cut is extremely flattering. I tried on a size 10 and size 12, the size 10 sat on my waist and was slightly shorter than the size 12 which sat on my hips and hit just above my knees (I am 5ft2ish) Both looked good, to be honest there was not a major difference between them.

At £75 this is far more within my budget than the M&S midi skirt, I have ordered it and know it will be worn so much this summer and through the winter, the neutral tan colour will work well with any colour of coat, I now have my eye on the new M&S coat for next season...

The shape of this coat is fab and I love coloured leopard print...but first lets concentrate and enjoy summer!
Do you like the M&S midi skirt or do you prefer the shorter version? Will you be buying into the suede look this summer? As always I would love to hear your thoughts and comments, until next time Frances xxx
I've definitely bought into suede and agree that fabulous though it is the M and S version is too much midi. The top shop version looks fantastic on you. It's a steal.
ReplyDeleteI invested in a Theory button through suede skirt when I could buy it in dollars and not pounds which was much much cheaper. It's knee length on me. I can't wear it all that much though as with every hour of wear its gets slightly more destroyed. Suede is such a hard fabric to wear.
I spied that topshop skirt too. It looks lovely on you. I agree it's a much easier length to wear. Tan is not a great colour on me, but it is a good neutral for many. I love suede, it's a gorgeous fabric and very versatile too.
ReplyDeleteLove how you're wearing it in the changing rooms - effortlessly stylish. I've been so out of love with skirts for years now. Having a thick waist, they're difficult for me to pull off but I really think I should explore this territory more. Can't wait to see what you do with the skirt when you 'properly' style it x
ReplyDeleteI agree a shorter tan suede skirt is easier to wear. However at 5'7" (not very tall, average really!) I find the short skirts out there TOO short. If I could find one that's slightly above the knee or even knee length it would be perfect. While I love the look and idea of the M&S skirt it is an expensive option considering its relative unwearability (for my casual lifestyle at least). If anyone knows of a good option for us average height ladies please let us know! Btw have tried the Zara one - not a great fit across the hips and a bit too short!
ReplyDeleteAgreed - I'm 5'6 / 5'7 ish and find most normal length skirts are too short, but the tall length ones are far too long... I'm also between sizes, but that's another story :) Sair x
DeleteMe three. The average height for a woman in the UK is only 5'3 though, which explains why a lot of stuff is on the short side.
DeleteLooks great! I've bought the Zara suede skirt, I decided to size up and I'm pleased with the fit. It's real suede & a steal at £40! Just too nervous to wear it with all this drizzly rain...
ReplyDeleteIt looks great but isn't it too warm for summer? I'll wait till Autumn before I buy a leather/suède skirt ( There is also the issue of having bought more then plenty already...) I have had a cheap suède jacket which I loved but I noticed it got shiny in places real soon which looked vile. I'm worried a cheap suède skirt would also be a one season wonder....
ReplyDeleteI've got the M&S one and I love it (am 5'8). It is expensive though and I fully expected to send it back but that didn't happen as it looked really good on! The short ones are too short for me these days - very much a mini skirt rather just above the knee.
ReplyDeleteLoving that look on you & as I'm only an inch taller I think i'm going to have to look into this further. I love the idea of it in winter styled with black tights, boots and a polo neck. I haven't worn skirts in an age, but now you've got me thinking :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great on you Frances & that coat is stunning! x
ReplyDeleteCan u tell from where you got that picture with the white blouse and black string? Love it!
