And it was called 'Yellow'.....

6.22.2016

Style Theory: When it is officially summer and the sun is refusing to shine sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands and wear some sun!
Jacket - Zara £39.99
T-Shirt - H&M £7.99
Trousers - Zara £17.99 (in sale)
Shoes - H&M (old season) similar here

I saw this biker jacket on Camilla Pihlo below, it caught my eye but I had no idea where it was from, luckily when I was walking through Zara there it was, in the 'new in' section. It is bold as brass, a real statement jacket, you certainly won't go unnoticed but it just added a much needed zing to my wardrobe. I will be dressing it down with jeans and trainers, it would also look fab over a floral maxi dress (and wellies for Glastonbury!) I think it looks so much more expensive than it's £39.99 price tag...I have a feeling I will be wearing this a lot! I also had to buy another pair of these khaki trousers, these are XS and are a neater fit than my other pair, they are the kind of trousers I wear non-stop in the summer as they are so comfy.

Camilla Pihl Instagram

Camilla looks pretty amazing in the jacket, love it styled with distressed jeans, a shirt and trainers #goals !

So what do you think, too loud? Are you a fan of a block coloured jacket? Are you like me and go to shop the sales and end up in the 'new in' section? As always I would love to hear you thoughts and comments, until next time Fran xxxx

Double Trouble...

5.02.2016

Style Theory: I find having my photo taken pretty awkward but when it is a shoot with a friend it is so much more fun. Joanne The Stylist and the Wardrobe and I had a fab afternoon hanging out in Wimbledon Village, all photos shot by Victoria Metaxas.

I naturally went for a super comfy option, I have been looking for a pair of baggy khakis for a while and these Zara trousers fit the bill perfectly. They are almost harem in style, incredibly comfortable and will look fab in the summer with a camisole top and Majorcan style sandals. For the spring I styled my khaki trousers with a lace detail victoriana top from H&M (sold out online but available instore), my M&S Alexa Chung blazer (size down) and my hardly-ever-off-my-feet Gucci shoes (I am getting my money's worth out of them!) I threw my M&S pink coat over the top and my navy radley bag, I always need structure against a baggy item of clothing it balances out the look..

This is my comfort zone, I love a smart/casual look, juxtaposing baggy and tailored. To pull my outfits together I always make sure two items are the same colour (my blazer and my bag) You can wear any range of colours, throw them together as long as two colours match on your outfit, it can be a small as the piping on an item of clothing with an accessories, I always think that these are the two pieces of string that tie your outfit together..just think two and you will always get it right.

Joanne looked gorgeous in J Crew trousers (similar), Topshop shoes and Zara blazer ..

Victoriana Top: H&M £29.99 (sold out online available in store)
Trousers: Zara £29.99
Coat: M&S (old season)
Bag: Radley similar here

*Photographs by Victoria Metaxas
I know I will be living in these trousers in the summer, they are so lightweight and will look fab with sandals and a tee shirt, just need a little sun now. The blazer has definitely been a suprise, I wasnt sure whether to keep it but have worn it so much, I love the 80s feel of it and the oversize look, it looks great with skinny jeans and tailored trousers. Have you invested in khakis so far this year, how are you wearing yours? As always I would love to hear your thoughts and comments

Check out Joanne's blog The Stylist and the Wardrobe, she has such a cool, impeccable style. And thanks to super talented photographer Victoria Metaxas , such a fab photographer (some of these photos were shot in the freak snow we had the other day!)xxx

I hope you are all having a fab Bank Holiday weekend, thanks so much for reading, until next time Fran xxx

March Must Haves...

2.24.2016

Zara Shiny Jacquard Top £29.99
Style Theory: After a couple of sunny days it feels decidedly Spring-like. New collections are starting to flood the high street, new colours, shapes, perfect pieces to refresh your winter wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Here are the pieces on my shopping list at the moment..

Style Inspiration to keep you on track...

Style Theory: When the sales start it is tempting to buy random items of clothing just because they are half price. However, if you stay focussed and keep your style in mind for the next year ahead you can tailor your sales shopping accordingly and buy some key classic or on trend items that will 'lift' your existing wardrobe, giving you new, current look for less...

So with this in mind here are my favourite streetstyle looks I will be using as my inspiration when I hit the sales later on today.....

Cropped Flare Jean

The cropped flare is 'a thing' for 2016, expect to see a lot more of this look. I am planning to chop the bottom off my J Brand Love Story jeans for this effect..I will let you know how I get on.

Pink

Pink still has a big place in my heart and I will be searching out muted pink tones to add colour to my wardrobe. I adore the satin dress above and have my American Vintage cardigan from Quattro Rish as a starting point.

Still without doubt my most comfortable trainers ever and they make every outfit look cool..go for the 'Neo white' colour when buying them as they are slightly vintage looking.

The Classic but Modern Dress Shape
Pin from ~ The Yellow Dress Blog

I adore Anna Mason designs, she has such an eye for classic but at the same time contemporary looks. Her dresses and tops are so feminine and flattering and are made bespoke for each customer with a huge range of fabrics and colours to choose from for each design. An absolute investment piece (they are definitely not cheap but if you do want to buy a forever dress this is one for you) and if you choose the right fabric you can wear these pieces from the height of summer with strappy sandals and in the depth of winter with tan leather boots and a wool coat.

Mules are having a moment this year and these Gucci mules are leading the way. They look slightly weird but my love for comfort, practicality (well, kind of practical) makes these a winner for me. Love them worn dressed down with the muted colours above, so stylish, so cool, so 2016..

Another iconic shoe of 2015/16 no doubt the high street will be flooded with 'homages' to this design - normally Zara are quick off the mark and I will be on the lookout as I love this elegant shape and block heel but do not have the money to buy Chanel..the hunt is on. I will be wearing them with all black in the winter and pale ankle length blue jeans and frilled/pleated shirts in the summer.

Gorgeously Back to Basics..

Sometimes it is good to keep things simple, I love beautiful classic items, a soft, oversize grey scarf (love this one from Travelling Bazaar) A beautiful bag, a simple, navy cashmere jumper (&Other Stories have some gorgeous ones) Things like these additions to your wardrobe can elevate your look, making you look sophisticated without it looking fussy.

For me my perfect wardrobe is all about balance, a few key investment pieces (bag, jumper, one piece jewellery) a few key, beautifully fitting basics (blue and black jeans, oversize scarf, camel/grey coat, cool pair of trainers) and some frivolous cheaper trend buys (colourful tops, a few pairs of crazy shoes, one slightly weird coat/jacket) et voila you have wardrobe happiness..it's easy!!

I hit the sales yesterday so will report back tomorrow on what I found, it was fairly manic so much busier than before Christmas but there were a few really fab bargains around.

Hope you are having a lovely Christmas and are managing to have a rest, ours has been fab, lots of time with the family, love spending lots of time with my sisters lots of laughter, drinking and food and more food!

As always I would love to hear your thoughts and comments, until next time Frances xxxx

Red Rules...

Style Theory: Grey and black, although incredibly chic can become a little lack lustre. I am feeling my monochrome wardrobe needs a shake up and a red knit will be the perfect colour pop..

Images via Pinterest
A red sweater can add an eyecatching focal point to an outfit, pair it with slouchy jeans and trainers (ideally with a flash of red on them, I am a huge fan of a spot of colour matching) Or pair your jumper with grey trousers and courts for a cool work look. Aran knit style sweaters are still big news and remember to buy on the bigger side rather than fitted. If you are concerned about your silhouette wear with skinny blue jeans and heels for a slick, chic look..

Her are my favourite on the high street now...

Clockwise from Top Left
Bella Freud 1970 Jumper £280
J Crew Cashmere blend sweater £110
Karen Millen £115
H&M Tassel Jumper £13.99
Uniqlo (mens) Merino sweater £24.90
Zara Bell Sleeve Sweater £23.99
A quick bright colour fix for you Autumn/Winter looks, I am still loving the Bella Freud sweater but will probably opt for the Zara or Uniqlo option!
Which one would you go for? As always I would love to hear your thoughts and comments, until next time Frances xxx

Winter Capsule Wardrobe Must Haves.... STEAL vs SPREE

Style Theory: My capsule wardrobe items for this season, a simple palette of creams and greys, chic understated, practical and cool. Can be mixed and matched with colours such as navys, deep plums, reds to add depth and variation. A simple formula that will work for women of all ages..

I have created two versions, the first is 'Spree' expensive, luxurious, investment pieces that are made of the best quality fabrics and are high on my wishlist...

SPREE:
Coat - Gianni Malin Wool Coat £315
Jumper - Jigsaw Aran Cable knit £149
Jeans - MiH Breathless Jean £195
Scarf - The White Company Cashmere oversize Scarf £198
Bag- Gucci Soho Disco Bag £650
Trainers - Golden Goose £260
The grey coat is this season's colour of coat to have, it is beautiful, understated and will go with everything. Perfect for wearing with jeans or throw over a party dress for a chic look. Add a deep plum or mustard oversize scarf for a pop of colour.
The winter white sweater, such a useful piece, I tried this Jigsaw jumper on recently, it is fab on really soft and cosy and a gorgeous fit and the roll neck sits perfectly.
I am officially obsessed with the Gucci Soho bag and am saving for one..red or black not sure..think it will be black as it is super practical.
Golden Goose trainers the ultimate super cool trainers, so expensive but look so cool on..

STEAL:
Coat - Zara £59.99
Jumper - Topshop £45
Jeans - Topshop £40
Scarf - Travelling Bazaar £40
Bag - Topshop (Leather) £38
Trainers - Stan Smith @Office £66.99
These are maybe not super cheap alternatives but are mid priced high street and made of good quality fabrics so they will last.
The coat is wool, I love the masculine shape it really will look fab over your shoulders with a glittery, shimmery Christmas dress. The scarf is 100% wool and gorgeously oversized but not so big that you are unable to wrap it round your neck, it sits perfectly.
The Topshop bag is leather, a fab shape, very Gucci-esque and looks far more expensive that it's £38 price.
Stan Smiths are the comfiest trainers I have ever had, honestly if you buy them you will not regret it and get so much wear out of them.

My Style:
For running around at the weekend..
Sunglasses- Spain
Jumper - Boden £89
Jeans - Topshop £40
Trainers - Footasylum £79.99
Bag - Aurora Willow Bag £64.50

Trying on the Jigsaw sweater in my Spree edit above..
Jigsaw Sweater - Link above
Zara - Biker Trousers - sold out
Stan Smith Trainers - Link above
Bag - Yosa Uk £19

So there are a few capsule wardrobe ideas for this season, I would love to invest in the Spree but unfortunately I am more on a steal budget!! Are you a fan of grey, do you already have any of these key pieces, what is your ideal style for this season??

Next time I will be finding the best Christmas Gifts for her under £100..or also known as my Christmas list ;-) Thanks so much for reading and as always I would love to hear your thoughts and comments, until next time Frances xxxxx

School Run Style - The Basics to get you through Autumn

Style Theory: For the Schoolrun I need practical, normally warm, rainproof clothes that are presentable. At this point in my children's school life, added to the fact we walk to school every morning, practicality rules over everything. So here is my run down of my most worn items, the additional pieces I will be buying for AW a dream item thrown in along with a few streetstyle images to show you how to style..

The JACKET:
I have long been a fan of a khaki/Camo jacket as a quick throw over when it is not raining. It keeps you warm but not baking you and looks a little edgy.
The best on the high street:
Topshop Tencel Jacket £45
This is a super lightweight jacket that can be thrown over a T-shirt or fine knit sweater in the Autumn, and layer underneath your parka in the winter. It also look pretty good over a dressed up evening look, black top, boyfriend jeans and heels..add an edge.
New Look Camo Jacket £32.99
I live in my camo jacket I bought a few years ago, it has been one of my most worn jackets. I wear it with everything from flared to skinny jeans (black, blue or white) I wear it over dresses when I am going out for the evening (I have an aversion to being too dressed up) You can clash it up with patterned tops, stripes/spots work really well. Just one of those hardworking, useful items to have in your wardrobe.

The COAT

The parka....I know this coat had been around for years but to be honest it is just so practical, warm, long and normally at least showerproof if not waterproof with a huge hood - essential when pushing a buggy/pulling a child on a scooter up to school, whilst carrying schoolbags/lunchboxes and homemade cardboard fish tanks?!

The best on the high street..
Hush Parka £170
I have featured this before, I love it.. a note of caution this is not waterproof (cotton outer) but how gorgeous anyway...
Zara Fleece Lined Parka £89.99
A good long length, like the waist details to give some shape and a generous amount of fur on the hood. Also some in black which is gorgeous..
Zara Parka £79.99
I bought one like this a couple of years ago from Zara and still wear it every winter. This is a short length so good for petite ladies as the length will not drown you.

The (Dream) Sweater
Net a Porter Bella Freud 1970 Sweater £280
Net a Porter Bella Freud Ginsberg Sweater £270
So these Bella Freud sweaters are the dream and one day I will have one! They are supersoft,  utterly cool (although they have been around for a while), look fab with denim shorts on cooler days in the summer and in the winter wear like Kate Moss with skinny black/leather jeans and boots..just gorgeous.
Boden Crew Neck Cashmere £139
Still on the pricey side but wearing a little bit of cashmere makes your outfit feel and look so much more luxurious and this is machine washable. I always buy sweaters at least a size bigger to add an extra slouchy look.
Uniqlo Cashmere £69.90
This is 100% cashmere sweater and amazing value. Uniqlo cashmere always wears well, it says to dry clean only (eek) but I am sure I have cold washed mine (do not quote me on that!)

Topshop zip back sweater £38
This sweater has a zip detail running down the back and a real slouchy look. It looks more expensive than £38, wear layered over a longline vest top with boyfriend jeans and trainers.

The Top

The Breton top, again an absolute classic, wear it with a camo jacket, denim shorts and trainers on warmer days, on colder days use it as a layering piece under a sweater..this style never looks tired
Petite Bateau Breton £58
I invested in a Petite Bateau breton a couple of years ago and I am so glad I did. The fabric is thick so doesn't cling to my tummy, the shape is quite boxy and sits well over the waistband of my jeans and it washes really well with no colour bleeding.
Boden Envelope Neck Breton £39
I really like an envelope neck, it really sits nice at the front, doesn't slouch off your shoulders and is flattering. I also have a Boden breton and again this has washed really well.

H&M £12.99
Amazing price and great for an additional 'schoolrun' top, this would look fab under black dungarees with trainers and a camo for an understated, cool look.

The Jeans

Jeans are a godsend..at the moment I prefer my boyfriend jeans this mainly due to the fact that I have gorged this summer and am finding my skinny jeans a little.bit.tight... however I hope to bring back the skinnies in the Autumn along with my waistline and new love of exercise (well I can try?!)

First the Boyfriends

The best on the high street..

Levis 501ct @ Very £95
I have these jeans and love them, they come up fairly big so size down. The distressing just gets better over time and I wear mine dressed up with heels if I am going out. So comfortable, such a useful pair of jeans.
River Island £42
River Island is always a good 'go to' shop for jeans, the pale colour of these jeans is perfect for this season and the ankle length so flattering and cool.

Black Skinny Jeans
Topshop Baxter Jeans £40
Topshop Baxters are still my favourite affordable skinny jeans, for Autumn team these with a pair of trainers (love these with lo black converse) and an oversize cozy sweater (the cashmere sweaters above or an oversize forest green sweater - Topshop has a fab one)

Dungarees

Topshop Dungarees £48
Once you try dungarees you will realise how incredibly comfortable they are, I bought mine from H&M last year (they have since sold out) and I have worn them loads, yes I do still get a few smart comments from the Husband but for the comfort factor I happily ignore..

The Trainers

All Streetstyle photos above via Pinterest
Golden Goose @Matches £250
These trainers are so expensive but to me perfect in every way, love the worn look (crazy eh?) and the leopard detail at the back. I have been admiring these for years, again one for my wishlist.

Adidas Stan Smith Original (Neo White) £67
A classic style, incredibly comfortable. Make sure you order the Neo white (off white - kind of yellowing colour) they look a little more worn less glowing than the white ones.

Nike Thea @Office £84.99
These look fab with black skinny jeans or dungarees (see image above) or white jeans in the Spring. They are the ultimate in comfort and will make the walking part of the schoolrun a breeze..
Converse @John Lewis £45
These are for non rainy days, they will look fab with dresses in the Summer, in the Autumn pair with ankle length skinny jeans and an oversize sweater. Admittedly they are to cold to wear in the winter..my feet freeze in them but you can bing them out again in the Spring..

My Schoolrunstyle

As you can see I do practice what I preach, for me the schoolrun is all about denim, trainers, stripes and camo, a pretty simple, basic combination but simple is what I need at 7am!

Nothing very groundbreaking in my style formula..everything is for ease and comfort but I hope you have found this rather mega edition useful. Next time my two minute make-up in the morning that takes me from looking super rough to kind of acceptable (from a distance!)

What is your schoolrun formula, do you wear your gym stuff (I would if I actually got my butt into gear and did some exercise) or do you go straight to work? I would love to hear your thoughts. I know Schoolrunstyle can sometimes be a strange subject because really, I genuinely do not care what people wear, we are all just trying to get our kids to school. Personally I like to get dressed (ie not do the schoolrun in my pjs) because I work from home and if I do not get myself sorted first thing in the morning I would never do it and I would never get out of pyjamas..ever..!
Would love to know your thoughts and comments and Mums from my school, I know I fail miserably loads of mornings to look presentable but lets just keep that between us!! ;-)

Until next time, Frances xx
